New Helmer Cell Washer Enhancing Patient Care at CKHA
Chatham-Kent Health Alliance’s (CKHA) Laboratory has a new piece of equipment, thanks to the generosity of the residents of Chatham-Kent. Donations to the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance Foundation, in support of CKHA’s most urgent capital equipment needs, helped to purchase a $12,000 Helmer Cell Washer – an innovative piece of equipment that is already having an immensely positive impact on CKHA’s Laboratory.
According to Shelley Bas, Charge Technologist – Transfusion Medicine, CKHA, a Cell Washer is used to “‘wash cells when a patient has an antibody/antibodies. When a patient has an antibody, the donor unit that is given must not have that antigen on the cells. If they do, then the patient could react to the unit of blood. These units have to be screened and some tests require us to use the Cell Washer to complete the tests.”
“We are thrilled to have this piece of equipment available to us again,” says Jolene Kresan, Director, Laboratory, CKHA. “Our previous washers were used extensively, but both broke down which created an urgent need for a replacement. Cell Washers save Technologists time as they can be doing something else while the machine is running. Prior to having this type of equipment at CKHA, Technologists had to wash by hand, which can take up to double the time to complete.”
“On behalf of the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance Foundation, thank you to the residents of Chatham-Kent for their ongoing and generous contributions to local healthcare,” says Michele Grzebien-Huckson, Executive Director, Chatham-Kent Health Alliance Foundation. “Without your support of CKHA’s most urgent capital equipment needs, we would not have been able to purchase this important piece of equipment that continues to enhance patient care at CKHA.”
