About the CKHA Oncology Gift Basket Program
In 2012, Karen Brodie and her good friend, Barb Lather, delivered a basket of products, ranging from soap and shampoo to toothbrushes, hand sanitizer and head scarves, among many other items, to the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance Foundation (CKHA). The products, which are recommended for those going through cancer treatments, were for CKHA’s Oncology patients. At the time, both Karen and Barb were battling cancer themselves and wanted to help those in similar situations, by providing necessities that some cancer patients may not be able to afford.
All of the products were purchased by Karen and Barb and donated to this initiative, now known as the CKHA Oncology Gift Basket Program. They would purchase the items, arrange them in a gift basket and personally deliver them to CKHA’s Oncology Department on a monthly basis.
Sadly, Karen lost her brave battle with cancer in January 2013. In her memory, family, friends and colleagues donated funds to the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance Foundation to support this program that she and Barb had lovingly and generously created in 2012. More than $15,975 has been raised to date in Karen’s memory for the CKHA Oncology Gift Basket Program and through this outpouring of love and generosity, this program and fund continues to grow.
For those who knew and loved Karen, or those who want to give in honour of a loved one who is currently battling cancer, you can donate to the CKHA Oncology Gift Basket Fund via the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance Foundation at 519.436.2538 or www.ckhaf.ca. If you have questions about the types of products needed for the baskets, please contact Barb Lather at email@example.com.
“Karen Brodie was an immensely loved and respected member of our community and we are thrilled to see the program that she helped create, to support those in our community who are bravely battling cancer, thrive,” says Michele Grzebien-Huckson, Executive Director, Chatham-Kent Health Alliance Foundation. “This event will be a wonderful tribute to Karen and the impact she had, and continues to have, in Chatham-Kent through the CKHA Oncology Gift Basket Program.”
