Chatham-Kent Health Alliance (CKHA) and Chatham-Kent Health Alliance Foundation (CKHAF) are pleased to announce the introduction of the Rezum urology procedure to CKHA’s Urology program. Funded by a community donor who wishes to remain anonymous, this cutting-edge procedure for treating an enlarged prostate is being offered in the Chatham-Kent region for the first time, bringing advanced medical care closer to home for the community.

The Rezum procedure is a minimally invasive treatment that uses water vapor (steam) to shrink excess prostate tissue, relieving symptoms such as difficulty urinating, and improving the quality of life for men suffering from enlarged prostate tissue, which is associated with Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy (BPH).

“Thanks to the generosity of our donor, this innovative technology will offer a safe and effective alternative to traditional surgical options,” says Christine Mitchell, CKHAF President & CEO. “The Rezum procedure has fewer side effects and a quicker recovery time than traditional surgery.”

Furthermore, the procedure is extremely quick compared to traditional methods, with the full appointment taking place in approximately an hour, and discharge from the hospital on the same day.

The anonymous donor was inspired to fund the purchase of the equipment required for the procedure after exemplary experiences with CKHA’s Urology program, including the program’s physicians and support staff.

Dr. Christopher Langley, a Urology Specialist at CKHA, is pleased to be a part of bringing this procedure to Chatham-Kent.

“Rezum is a minimally invasive treatment for BPH that offers several advantages over conventional [surgery],” states Dr. Langley. “This affords patients more variety and has several advantages pertaining to sexual function and urinary symptom improvement.”

BPH is a condition which affects about 50 per cent of men by age 60, and up to 90 per cent of men by age 85, meaning that the introduction of the Rezum procedure at CKHA will have a substantial impact on improving the lives of many men in the community.

Individuals who are interested in this procedure should speak with their health care provider for more information. Rezum is not covered by OHIP; however, some private health insurance provides coverage.
